The nineties of Malayalam cinema was a time when producers made a minimum guarantee if there was a Suresh Gopi and a khaki uniform. Films written by Renji Panicker and directed by Shaji Kailas and Joshi are the most memorable. Suresh Gopi’s filmmaking since 2000 has seen a decline in this range of films. Kaval is the second film of Nithin Renji Panicker, who made his directorial debut with Mammootty starrer ‘Kasaba’. Another interesting feature of the film is that Ranji Panicker, who has created many mass characters for Suresh Gopi, plays a major role alongside the hero. We get to know Suresh Gopi’s Thampane through the middle aged character Antony played by Ranji Panicker. Both had a habit of looking back on public affairs, especially those of plantation workers, when they were young, with their own business in the High Range. Antony and Thampan are the ones who later had to bear the brunt of having to contend with those in power in their personal lives. Unwilling to return to the ‘old life’ and memories, Thampan lives elsewhere but has to return to the high range. The plot of the movie is that he comes as a guard during the crisis of a close friend’s family.
